Led by Jamiia Franklin, SMSE JAZZ brings a fresh sound to South-East Michigan! From jazz standards to modern media arrangements, they feature local talent in every set.
Led by Jamiia Franklin, SMSE JAZZ is known for their collaborative spirit and sophisticated repertoire. The group performs everything from jazz standards to modern video game and film score arrangements. Featuring 13 musicians, their sets feature a vibrant, modern perspective on small ensemble jazz.
SMSE JAZZ (Southern-Michigan Small Ensemble Jazz), was formed December 8th, 2023 by Jamiia Franklin for her recital, "Of Whispers and Dances." Their breakout performance showcased Jamiia's arrangement of Yoko Shimomura's Dearly Beloved as the recital's closer. Following this debut, SMSE JAZZ continued to perform short sets.
In 2025, SMSE JAZZ transitioned to longer sets, culminating in their Premiere Concert on July 19th, 2025. This "Night of Jazz" was a curated showcase featuring member's arrangements, compositions, and adaptations. During this concert, The SMSE Saxes and Iridescent Bloom were featured, making it a vibrant celebration of the local music scene.
What began as a collective of Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College music students has grown into a premier ensemble for the South-East Michigan music scene. We provide a vital platform for local musicians to explore performance, composition, and arrangement beyond the classical genre. A desire to showcase local talent remains the inspiration behind the SMSE JAZZ's continued operation.
